Wildlife Education - Information and Advice for the Safe Removal of Bats from Attics

Sarasota Bat Removal

Not all wildlife removal companies are the same. Some have experience with bat removal projects, and are familiar with the proper methods for bat exclusion. But others use incorrect techniques, such as bat traps, summer exclusions, or worse, fumigants. Do your research before you hire someone!

I personally recommend Animal Pros for bat control in Sarasota. I have communicated with this company for many years, and they abide by these bat removal principles:

- Always perform a proper live exclusion.
- Never use poisons or fumigants or kill bats.
- Never use traps or attempt to relocate bats.
- Never do a removal during the maternity season.
- Seal all entry points shut with guarantee.
- Offer attic cleanup and decontamination.
- Properly Florida licensed and insured.

As I discuss repeatedly on this website, bat removal projects are not easy, and not for amateurs. I have seen many horrible attempts at bat colony removal throughout the years, done both by do-it-yourself homeowners and by incompetent companies. Never hire a Sarasota pest control company that uses poisons for rodent or insect control. They often attempt the same approach for bats. Not only is this incredibly destructive and illegal in Florida, but it results in disaster for the homeowner, and does not actually solve the problem. It's very important that the removal of bats from the attic of your home is done in the correct manner, and there is only one correct way, with a live bat exclusion. To read more about this process, read my bats in the attic home page.

Before you hire anyone, talk to them, and make sure that they understand what they are doing, and that they have experience. Be sure that they do abide by the principles I outlined above. This is not just for the sake of the bats - I'm no tree hugger - it's for the sake of doing the job correctly, for you and your property. The fact that it's good for the bats as well is a lucky coincidence. And really, bats are good animals, which I'm sure you realize. I hope you have a good experience with your Sarasota bat control project. You can email me personally if you have any problems with this company, and I will talk to them, but I doubt that will be necessary. Good luck!

I just read a lot of information about bat removal on your website. Thank you so much for posting all of that. Our entire neighborhood is overrun with bats, so I've learned a lot about them and learned to live with them, but didn't know a lot of other things that you mention on your site. We now suspect we're getting bat bugs in the upstairs apartment (I'm in a duplex). We've had bats inadvertently fly into my downstairs apartment and have simply opened windows and doors and waited for them to fly out. But just recently, my daughter (who just moved into the upstairs apartment) said it sometimes sounds like she's hearing bats in the wall. Along with that, she's finding these gross bugs around the windows directly under where the bats roost under the roof. At first we thought they might be bedbugs, but after having it thoroughly exterminator for the bed bugs, 5 weeks later she's finding these bugs. That's when we realized the location in conjunction to the bat roosts. Here's the big problem: There is NO access to the bat roost. There is no access door to the crawl-space type of area under the roof where they are. The bat door that lets them out and not in sounds great, but there would be no way to clean things up in that area. I live in New Jersey and I was wondering what your thoughts were about getting these critters out without any access to the roost. Could you give me your ideas on that? I'd like to pass on as much expertise about this project to the expert that I choose just in case he feels it's hopeless. Thank you SO much. My daughter's been crying over these bugs getting in and she's been living out of plastic bags for over a month. We do plan to have 2 that she caught analyzed to make sure that they are, indeed, bat bugs. She's close to breaking down over this situation.

You can remove the bats without access to the attic space. The bats are flying out of a hole on the OUTSIDE of the home. If you're going to remove them, do it NOW. The maternity season for brown bats in FL is pretty much here. You can't do it if the babies are already born. You may have to wait until August. Once the bats are gone, if the bugs are from the bats (I've never seen that before, actually) then the problem ought to go away.

Thank you so much for the information. I've had the bugs analyzed and they are, indeed, BAT bugs. I've spoken with a specialist who humanely extricates wildlife, including bats. He said the end of August (as you said) or beginning of Sept. would be a safe time to put a 1-way door up where the bats exit the building. He said that it was extremely important to patch any tiny holes that are in the walls to keep the bugs out, especially once the bats are gone because the bat bugs will go looking for other "hosts" to feed on. I appreciate you letting me know pretty much exactly when their maternity season starts. I just assume that since they've been coming out of the roost to feed since mid-April that they've pretty much already mated and possibly had their young if the gestational period is only a few weeks. Since the apartment isn't exactly "infested" with these bugs, I guess we'll have to just be vigilant in watching for more bugs and kill them as they come in because I'd rather be absolutely sure that no babies are left to starve to death. Thank you so much for that information. I deeply appreciate you taking the time to send it to me. Peggy
